JKCG responds after Customs detains BYD EVs

John Keells CG Auto (Pvt) Ltd (JKCG), the authorized distributor of BYD vehicles in Sri Lanka, has responded to concerns over the motor capacity of a recently imported consignment of electric vehicles, stating that all vehicles are equipped with 100-kilowatt (kW) motors and have been imported in full compliance with local regulations.

In an official statement, JKCG said it is cooperating with Sri Lanka Customs and providing all necessary documentation to clarify the matter. The company added that the BYD vehicles were imported directly from the manufacturer in China and are identical to models sold in international markets such as Singapore.

“The motor power of these vehicles has been verified through test reports issued by BYD in China and further certified by an independent testing body,” the company said, reassuring stakeholders and customers that it remains committed to transparency.

JKCG also addressed what it called “claims circulating in mainstream and social media,” insisting that all vehicle imports were conducted lawfully and that it is actively working with authorities to resolve the issue.

The statement follows media reports that nearly 1,000 BYD electric vehicles had been detained at the Colombo Port over suspected discrepancies in declared motor capacities. The vehicles, imported in six consignments this month, were all declared as 100kW, but officials suspect some may actually have 150kW motors — a difference that would significantly increase applicable taxes.

Under current tax rules, a 100kW electric vehicle is subject to an estimated Rs. 2.4 million in direct taxes, while a 150kW version can attract up to Rs. 5.4 million, excluding other levies. Customs is currently investigating whether the lower declarations were an attempt to evade higher duties.

Opposition MP Mujibur Rahman raised the issue in Parliament last week, pointing to a Rs. 4.5 million tax gap between new and used BYD ATTO 3 vehicles. He claimed that a brand-new ATTO 3 is taxed at Rs. 5.5 million under the 100kW classification, while used models are registered as 150kW and taxed at Rs. 10 million. (Newswire)
