IMF delegation meets Sri Lanka president to review reform progress

A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Wednesday to discuss the country’s ongoing economic reform programme and progress under the IMF-supported Extended Fund Facility.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Secretariat, focused on Sri Lanka’s position ahead of the fifth and sixth reviews of the IMF programme and recent developments in the country’s economic recovery, according to the President’s Media Division.

The IMF delegation commended Sri Lanka’s recent economic progress, noting improvements in growth, revenue management and foreign reserves, and said the country had moved towards a more resilient economic footing.

Discussions also centred on how Sri Lanka could continue implementing reforms while maintaining economic stability. The delegation also noted that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East posed external risks to Sri Lanka’s economy, particularly in relation to fuel prices and the energy sector.

Sri Lankan authorities told the IMF that the government had been taking measured steps to manage these pressures while providing targeted relief to vulnerable groups.

President Dissanayake said Sri Lanka had met all programme targets and reached a position of relative stability, while stressing the need to minimise the impact of reforms and external challenges on the public.

The IMF delegation was led by Mission Chief Evan Papageorgiou and included Martha Woldemichael, Enrique Flores Curiel, Dinar Prihardini, Ursula Wiriadinata, Ozlem Aydin, Yorbol Yakhshilikov, Klakow Akepanidtaworn and Manavee Abeyawickrama.

Sri Lankan officials attending the meeting included Central Bank Governor P. Nandalal Weerasinghe, CBSL official S. Jegajeevan, Treasury Secretary Dr Harshana Suriyapperuma, Deputy Treasury Secretary A. K. Seneviratne and Director General of Fiscal Policy M. K. C. Senanayake.

Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Anil Jayantha Fernando also participated, along with Senior Economic Advisor to the President Duminda Hulangamuwa and Senior Additional Secretary to the President G. M. R. D. Aponsu. (Newswire)
