Health Minister attends World Health Day event in New Delhi as chief guest

Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa participated as the chief guest at the World Health Day 2026 commemorations held in New Delhi, India, in his capacity as Chair of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for South-East Asia.

The event, organised jointly by the WHO South-East Asia Regional Office and India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, was held under the theme “Together for Health: Stand with Science.”

Addressing the gathering, the minister underscored the importance of the “One Health” approach, which recognises the interconnected nature of human, animal and environmental health.

During the event, he also launched the Banyan Framework for Health and Well-Being 2026–2028 and the WHO Regional Director’s Annual Report for 2025, noting that the framework aligns with Sri Lanka’s upcoming national health policies aimed at strengthening a resilient health system.

On the sidelines of the event, the minister held discussions on regional health challenges and scientific collaboration with senior officials, including India’s Health Ministry Secretary Ms Punya Salila Srivastava and WHO South-East Asia Regional Office Officer-in-Charge Dr Catharina Boehme.
