Harsha questions Sri Lanka’s absence at Indian Ocean Conference

Opposition MP Harsha de Silva has questioned the absence of Sri Lanka at a regional forum, raising concerns over the country’s representation at the Indian Ocean Conference.

In a post on X, de Silva asked why Sri Lanka was not represented at what he described as an important gathering of South Asian leaders. Referring to an image from the conference, he noted that Sri Lanka’s participation was not visible.

He also questioned the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the absence of senior officials, including the minister or the deputy minister.

De Silva dismissed possible justifications such as cost-cutting measures or competing political priorities, stating that a failure to recognize the importance of such forums could result in missed opportunities.

He warned that Sri Lanka risks losing the chance to leverage its strategic position in the Indian Ocean if it does not actively engage in regional platforms. (Newswire)
