GMOA threatens islandwide strike over transfer issues

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has announced plans to launch an islandwide strike if its demands, including issues related to the recent transfer list of doctors, are not addressed by the Ministry of Health.

Speaking to the media, GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Hansamal Wijesuriya said the union has decided to resort to trade union action if satisfactory solutions are not provided by 8:00 am on the 11th of August.

“We have continuously engaged in discussions with the Ministry of Health, but there has been no meaningful intervention regarding the problems in the transfer list. If the ministry fails to take corrective action by the deadline, we will launch an islandwide strike,” he said.

Dr. Wijesuriya accused health authorities of ignoring the concerns raised by the GMOA and emphasized that the union’s central committee had unanimously decided on the strike as a last resort.

The proposed strike is expected to affect government hospitals across the country if a resolution is not reached in the coming days. (Newswire)
