The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath is set to step down from her position at the end of August 2025, marking the end of a transformative tenure at the global financial institution.

Gopinath will return to Harvard University, where she is set to become the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics in the university’s Department of Economics.

The announcement was made by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, who lauded Gopinath’s leadership during a period marked by global economic uncertainty, including the COVID-19 crisis, inflation surges, and debt challenges facing many emerging economies.

“Gita has made an extraordinary contribution to the IMF and the global economy,” Georgieva stated. “She played a key role in shaping the Fund’s response to historic economic disruptions, and her legacy will continue to inspire policy innovation and resilience.”

Gopinath joined the IMF in January 2019 as Chief Economist, becoming the second woman to hold that position. She gained widespread recognition for guiding the Fund’s research and global outlook during the pandemic. Her elevation to First Deputy Managing Director in January 2022 made her the highest-ranking Indian-American in the Fund’s history.

During her tenure, Gopinath led high-level policy discussions on global inflation, monetary policy coordination, debt restructuring, and the reform of the international financial architecture. She also played a central role in driving the IMF’s climate finance strategies and digital currency initiatives.

Her return to Harvard reflects her continued commitment to academic excellence and thought leadership in international economics.

Gopinath has previously been listed among Bloomberg’s 50 Most Influential People, Forbes’ World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, and recognized globally for her work in macroeconomics and global financial policy.
