The Rs. 50 tax on fuel will be removed once the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation’s (CPC) debt—acquired by the Treasury under the previous government—is fully repaid, Power and Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody told Parliament.
He said half of the Rs. 884 billion debt has already been settled.
The Minister was responding to a question by SJB MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, where he explained that the tax was introduced specifically to address the CPC’s liabilities, and only standard government taxes remain beyond that.
“Half of the debt has already been repaid. The Rs. 50 fuel tax will be considered for removal once the full amount is settled. Currently, only standard government taxes are in effect,” he said. (Newswire)
