Fuel situation & QR system : Update from Minister

Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath says nine fuel shipments are scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka during April, as the Government moves to stabilise supplies following disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict.

Speaking at a public meeting in Matara yesterday (05) during the JVP’s commemoration of “April Heroes Day”, the Minister said the Government has already managed the energy crisis that emerged after the outbreak of the Middle East war.

He said temporary measures introduced earlier — including the QR-based fuel distribution system, odd-even number plate system, and Wednesday public holiday — were implemented as short-term solutions to manage shortages.

Minister Herath noted that queues have now eased and the QR system is functioning effectively, adding that the Government is prepared to gradually remove restrictions if supply conditions improve.

He further stated that the Wednesday holiday introduced to reduce fuel consumption may also be withdrawn once the situation normalises, allowing the country to return to regular operations.

The Minister urged the public not to panic, stating that nine fuel vessels are expected to arrive during April, which will help ensure continuous fuel supply. (Newswire)
