Former CID DIG arrested over stolen Kandyan-era moonstone probe

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has arrested former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Prasad Ranasinghe, in connection with an inquiry into the theft of a valuable archaeological artefact.
According to the Commission, the investigation concerns the disappearance of a historic moonstone located near the entrance gate of the palace of King Sri Vira Parakrama Narendra Sinha, the last monarch of the Kandyan Kingdom, at the Udawatta archaeological site in Kundasale.
Ranasinghe is accused of exerting undue influence to obstruct the investigation and of aiding certain suspects to evade justice, thereby committing the offence of corruption.
He was taken into custody at around 11:45 am today by officers of the Bribery Commission. The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. (Newswire)
