Foreign Coach set to Replace Jayasuriya as SLC Opens Talks

Sri Lanka Cricket has begun discussions with several foreign candidates to replace head coach Sanath Jayasuriya, who has announced his intention to step down from the position, officials said.

SLC Chief Executive Officer Ashley de Silva told the Sunday Times that formal negotiations are currently underway, but declined to reveal the identities of the prospective candidates.

“We have been negotiating with a few foreign coaches,” de Silva said. “We cannot reveal their identities at this stage, but as soon as discussions are finalised, we will make a public announcement.”

Sri Lanka’s next assignment is a limited-overs series against the Afghanistan national cricket team in the UAE in mid-March. De Silva said the board is hopeful of finalising the new appointment before the series begins.

He also confirmed that Jayasuriya’s successor will be a foreign coach, signalling a continuation of Sri Lanka Cricket’s preference for overseas expertise.

Jayasuriya took charge following Sri Lanka’s disastrous 2023 World Cup campaign, where the team failed to qualify for the Champions Trophy, and amid a difficult 2024 T20 World Cup campaign.

Under his tenure, Sri Lanka played 75 international matches across all formats — excluding the most recent fixture against Pakistan — securing 34 victories for an overall win percentage of 45.33 percent. (Newswire)
