Fake “Health Minister” Remanded Until April 21

A suspect accused of impersonating Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa and collecting money from the public has been remanded until April 21.

The order was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama after the suspect was produced before court following his arrest by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The suspect, identified as Hettiarachchige Sudesh Nalinda Alwis of Pilimatalawa, was arrested at the airport after returning to Sri Lanka from overseas.

According to investigators, the suspect had allegedly opened bank accounts using the Minister’s name and solicited donations from the public, claiming funds were needed to provide a wheelchair to a Buddhist monk.

The investigation was launched following a complaint lodged by Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa with the CID’s Computer Crimes Unit.

The CID further told court that similar scams using the names of doctors, nurses and other prominent individuals to fraudulently obtain donations were also being investigated.

The Magistrate ordered further investigations and instructed authorities to arrest any other suspects connected to the incident and produce them before court. (Newswire)
