Colombo Public Library launches “100 for 100” book drive to mark centenary
The Colombo Public Library has launched an islandwide book donation campaign titled “100 for 100” to mark its 100th anniversary, aiming to collect books for 100 libraries across Sri Lanka.
Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazar said the initiative was conceived as a way to ensure the centenary celebrations make a meaningful contribution to society.
“Last December, our public library completed 100 years of service to the community. As we prepared to celebrate this historic milestone, we asked ourselves how we could make the centenary truly meaningful to society,” she said.
The campaign seeks donations of new and pre-loved books and stationery to support libraries in need across the island.
“Reading is more than education. It is hope. It is resilience. It is a foundation for rebuilding a nation,” the mayor said, inviting individuals, families, schools and businesses to take part in the effort.
She called on the public to help “turn 100 years of legacy into 100 new beginnings” by contributing to the drive.
