A 37-year-old Canadian woman was arrested early this morning at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for attempting to smuggle a large quantity of hashish into Sri Lanka.
The suspect arrived in the island early this morning onboard a flight from Canada via Doha. During a routine inspection, Customs officials searched her luggage and discovered 18.1 kilograms of hashish concealed inside.
The seized narcotics are estimated to have a street value of around Rs. 181 million, according to Sri Lanka Customs.
Customs Media Spokesperson and Additional Director General Seevali Arukgoda said that preliminary investigations are underway. The suspect and the seized drugs are expected to be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB). (Newswire)
