Can shops add 2.5% fee for Card Use ? CBSL replies

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has clarified that merchants are not legally permitted to charge an additional fee—such as 2.5%—from customers for transactions made using debit or credit cards.

The Central Bank stated that under the agreement between merchants and banks when obtaining a card payment machine, it is clearly stipulated that no extra charges may be passed on to the customer.

“If a merchant demands more than the listed price, customers should immediately report it to their card-issuing bank,” CBSL official said.

This comes amid growing complaints from consumers that certain shops and service providers add extra fees for card payments. (Newswire)
