Australian Governor-General Samantha Joy Mostyn met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Thursday at the Presidential Secretariat, where the two leaders held bilateral discussions.
Talks focused on strengthening the 75-year-old diplomatic relationship between Sri Lanka and Australia and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Governor-General Mostyn reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka under President Dissanayake’s leadership, with particular emphasis on economic assistance.
President Dissanayake said the visit would further enhance the longstanding friendship between the two countries. He acknowledged Australia’s support during the 2004 tsunami and Sri Lanka’s recent economic crisis, and expressed appreciation for ongoing cooperation in economic development, education, defence, tourism, and maritime affairs.
He noted that Australia remains a key destination for Sri Lankans seeking employment, education, and vocational training, and expressed interest in adopting best practices from Australia’s experience.
The President also highlighted Sri Lanka’s favourable investment environment for Australian businesses.
Governor-General Mostyn arrived in Sri Lanka on Wednesday for a three-day official visit at the President’s invitation. She is scheduled to visit Australian-supported projects in Bandaragama, Mirissa, and Weligama. (Newswire)
