Amber heat advisory issued for several areas

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued a warm weather advisory for parts of the country, warning that the heat index is likely to reach the “Caution” level in several areas today and tomorrow.
The advisory, issued at 3.30 p.m. on Monday (9), applies to the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as the Monaragala district.
The heat index calculates the temperature felt by the human body when relative humidity and air temperature are combined.
Authorities advised the public to take precautionary measures to reduce heat-related health risks.
Workers at job sites are urged to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the shade. People indoors are advised to check on the elderly and those who are ill.
The public has also been warned not to leave children unattended in vehicles and to limit strenuous outdoor activities.
Wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing and staying well hydrated are also recommended. (Newswire)
