Above 50 mm of rain expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today

Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today, while mainly fair weather will prevail elsewhere over the island, according to the Department of Meteorology. 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Northwestern provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts after 2.00 pm. 

Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm can be expected at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts. A few showers may occur in the Uva and Eastern provinces. 

Misty conditions can be expected in some places in the Western, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Kurunegala districts in the morning. 

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are likely at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Matara via Galle during the evening or night.

Winds will be easterly to northeasterly. Wind speed will be 20-30 kmph.

The sea areas around the island will be slight. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
