Essential Services Commissioner announces sweeping actions to aid affected communities

Sri Lanka has launched urgent measures to restore essential public services and support disaster-hit communities, the Commissioner-General of Essential Services announced on Sunday night.

In a statement issued under the authority of the Extraordinary Gazette No. 2464/31, Commissioner-General B.K. Prabath Chandrakeerthi said all Provincial Chief Secretaries have been instructed to immediately assess infrastructure damages in their areas and report them for rapid response. They have also been directed to identify disruptions to food supplies and other critical services and take swift action to resolve them

The Commissioner-General has authorised Provincial Councils to share equipment and personnel across regions, allowing local government institutions with available resources to assist those severely affected by the ongoing disaster.

District Secretaries have also been advised to prepare immediate action plans to accelerate the delivery of disaster relief.

In addition, approval was granted to unload a 3,955-metric-ton LP Gas vessel at the Port of Hambantota after it was unable to discharge cargo in Colombo. The District Secretary of Puttalam received approval to open the Lanka Sathosa warehouse in Chilaw and distribute stored food items to affected families.

Chandrakeerthi said state officials are working with maximum dedication to supply food, drinking water, and other essential services during the crisis, assuring that measures are in place to support the public and restore normalcy.

He extended his gratitude to citizens for their cooperation during this challenging period. (Newswire)
