Dr. Chandranath Amarasekara appointed Deputy Governor of CBSL

In terms of the provisions in the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Act, No. 16 of 2023, Hon. Minister of Finance, as recommended by the Governing Board, has appointed Dr. C Amarasekara, Assistant Governor, as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka with effect from 24 October 2025.
With over 22 years of service at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Dr. Amarasekara brings deep expertise in monetary policy and macroeconomic research.
Before his appointment as Deputy Governor, he served as Assistant Governor, overseeing the departments of Economic Research, Statistics, Market Operations, Facilities Management, and Macroprudential Surveillance, and as Secretary to the Monetary Policy Board.
He previously served at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington D.C. as the Alternate Executive Director representing the constituency comprising Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan (January 2022 โ February 2024). Before this assignment, he built a long and distinguished career in the Economic Research Department of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, where he ultimately served as Director of Economic Research prior to his release to the IMF.
In addition to the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Dr. Amarasekara serves on multiple CBSL committees and external boards.
Dr. Amarasekaraโs research on monetary policy and other central banking themes has been published in several international and local journals and is widely acknowledged and cited.
He holds a PhD and MSc in Economics (with Distinction) from the University of Manchester, a First Class BA (Hons) in Economics from the University of Peradeniya, and is also an Attorney-at-Law.
