Five killed in multiple road accidents across the country
Five people, including an 11-day-old infant and a schoolboy, were killed in five separate road accidents reported yesterday (20) in Weerawila, Puttalam, Weliweriya, Pudukkuduirippu, and Polgahawela police divisions.
Police said the infant, who was among a family of four travelling in a three-wheeler, died after the vehicle collided with a lorry in Thurusawana, Weerawila, on the Hambantota–Weerawila road. The victims, residents of Tissamaharama, were admitted to Tissamaharama Hospital, where the infant succumbed to injuries.
In another incident, a 16-year-old schoolboy from Yatigaluwa was killed when two motorcycles collided near Nainadenya junction on the Yangalmodara–Narammala road. Both riders were admitted to the Kurunegala Hospital, where one was pronounced dead.
A 35-year-old man from Madurankuliya died after a lorry collided with his motorcycle near Palaviya junction on the Puttalam–Colombo road. The rider and pillion passenger were rushed to Puttalam Hospital, where the rider succumbed to injuries.
Meanwhile, a 26-year-old man from Kuruvil was killed when two motorcycles collided near Vellampalam junction on the Mullaitivu–Paranthan road. He was admitted to the Mankulam Hospital but later died.
In Weliweriya, a 68-year-old woman from the area died after being knocked down by a van while crossing the road near Jayanti Mawatha junction on the New Kandy Road. She was admitted to Gampaha Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
