Sri Lanka’s foreign worker remittances hit US$5 billion in 2025

Sri Lanka’s foreign worker remittances reached a record US$5 billion in 2025, driven by strong inflows throughout the year, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) reported.
In August 2025, remittances totaled US$680.8 million, up 19.3% from US$577.5 million in August 2024. For the period January to August, total remittances reached US$5,116 million, compared with US$4,288.2 million in the same period last year.
The increase highlights the continued contribution of Sri Lankan workers abroad to the national economy, bolstering foreign exchange reserves amid ongoing economic challenges.
