Sajith to host Sri Lankan Leopard Day 2026

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa will host Sri Lankan Leopard Day 2026 on Saturday (01) in Colombo, bringing together conservationists, researchers, policymakers, government institutions, civil society groups and youth representatives to discuss efforts to protect the endangered species.

The event will be held from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. at No. 30, Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Colombo 7.

The programme aims to strengthen national efforts to conserve the Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), an endemic subspecies found only in Sri Lanka and considered a key predator in maintaining ecological balance.

The event is expected to serve as a platform for discussions on scientific research, conservation strategies and stakeholder collaboration aimed at ensuring the long-term survival of the Sri Lankan leopard.

A special focus will also be placed on engaging students and young conservation leaders through interactions with scientists and wildlife experts.

Sajith said protecting the Sri Lankan leopard is not only a wildlife conservation issue but a national responsibility that contributes to safeguarding ecosystems, preserving natural heritage and promoting sustainable development.

Representatives from government agencies, universities, research institutions, conservation organisations, the corporate sector, diplomatic missions, the media and youth groups are expected to attend the event. (Newswire)
