The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has warned traders that it is illegal to store, display, distribute or sell motorcycle helmets that do not carry the Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) Product Certification Mark.

In a special notice issued to helmet traders, the CAA said all locally manufactured and imported motorcycle protective helmets offered for sale in Sri Lanka must bear the SLS Product Certification Mark in accordance with Gazette Extraordinary No. 1923/65 and the requirements of SLS 517.

The Authority urged traders to inspect their existing stocks and ensure that every helmet on sale carries the required certification mark.

The CAA also advised traders to verify supplier invoices and importer details, remove non-compliant helmets from sale immediately, avoid selling helmets with suspicious or removable SLS stickers, and issue receipts for all sales.

The Authority stressed that claims such as a helmet being an original import, carrying foreign certifications such as DOT, ECE or ISI, being a racing helmet, or assurances from suppliers do not exempt traders from complying with Sri Lankan regulations.

The CAA warned that legal action will be taken against traders found selling helmets without the mandatory SLS Product Certification Mark, adding that ignorance of the law will not be accepted as a defence. (Newswire)
