Tharoor praises Ranil’s ‘Sacrifices and Services’, says History will be kinder

Indian MP Shashi Tharoor has praised former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe following a meeting in Colombo, saying history is likely to judge the former President more favourably than contemporary political assessments.

Tharoor, who met Wickremesinghe over lunch during his visit to Sri Lanka, said the former President’s “sacrifices” and services to the country in recent years had been overshadowed by the rapid political transformation in the country.

“History is bound to be kinder to him than contemporary political judgements might be,” Tharoor said in a social media post.

The Indian parliamentarian said he had enjoyed Wickremesinghe’s friendship for nearly two decades and believed the former President genuinely had the best interests of Sri Lanka and the broader region at heart.

However, Tharoor subsequently clarified that the remarks represented his personal assessment and did not reflect the position of any institution, political party or government.

“These are, of course, my personal views and engage no institution, party or government. Friendship has its prerogatives!” he added.

Tharoor described his meeting with Wickremesinghe as a “warm luncheon discussion” during his first day in Sri Lanka. (Newswire)
