Judicial Service Association push back on retirement age extension: 9 key concerns

The Judicial Service Association of Sri Lanka (JSASL), representing District Judges and Magistrates, has strongly opposed a proposed constitutional amendment to extend the retirement age of judges, warning that the move could affect judicial independence, career progression and public confidence in the judiciary.

In a detailed letter dated July 22, 2026, addressed to Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara, the Association said its members had unanimously decided to oppose extending the statutory retirement age of judges, including judges of the superior courts. (Newswire)
