Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya says the Government is moving ahead with plans to repurpose the Presidential House and former official ministerial bungalows for public and commercial use instead of using them as official residences.

Speaking in Parliament today, the Prime Minister said it is the current administration’s policy not to occupy the Presidential House or the official bungalows previously allocated to ministers.

She said a special programme is being implemented to maintain the properties and prevent them from falling into disrepair while they are being converted for commercial and other public purposes.

Amarasuriya said a Cabinet-appointed committee had recommended that the Presidential House and other such properties be utilised for commercial activities or other public uses, adding that the process is already underway.

She further said some former official ministerial bungalows have already been converted for judicial use, with court proceedings now being held in those buildings to help improve the efficiency of the judicial system.

Responding to claims circulating on social media, the Prime Minister rejected allegations that ministers of the current Government are residing in official bungalows.

She said no member of the current Cabinet is living in an official residence, noting that some ministers are instead staying at the Madiwela MPs’ housing complex.

The Prime Minister added that the Government is implementing the promises it made to the public as planned and urged lawmakers not to rely on unverified information circulating on social media when raising issues in Parliament. (Newswire)
