Over 15,900 kg of drugs seized in Sri Lanka’s anti-drug operations

Sri Lankan authorities have seized more than 15,900 kilograms of illicit drugs and arrested 230,248 suspects since the launch of the nationwide “Ratama Ekata” anti-drug operation on Oct. 30, 2025, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Police Narcotics Bureau Ashoka Dharmasena said.
The operation, launched under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is being jointly carried out by the Sri Lanka Police, the Tri-Forces, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Customs and the Special Task Force (STF).
According to DIG Dharmasena, methamphetamine (“Ice”) accounted for the highest number of arrests, with 89,056 suspects taken into custody and 2,608 kg of the drug seized.
Authorities have also arrested 74,619 suspects in connection with heroin offences and recovered 2,248 kg of heroin.
In addition, 51,490 suspects were arrested over cannabis-related offences, with 7,481 kg of cannabis seized.
He also reported the seizure of 289 kg of cocaine, leading to the arrest of 201 suspects. Authorities have further recovered 1,636 kg of Kush and 349 kg of hashish during the operations.
DIG said the total quantity of dangerous narcotic drugs seized under the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, including heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, Kush and hashish, now stands at 15,917 kg.
He added that the operations have targeted both drug traffickers and those assisting organised narcotics networks, while continuing daily raids against individuals addicted to illicit drugs. (Newswire)
