Navy arrests 28 in crackdown on illegal fishing operations

The Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 28 individuals involved in illegal fishing activities during a series of operations conducted across the island’s coastal waters between July 1 and 15.

The operations, carried out by the Eastern and Northern Naval Commands, also led to the seizure of 12 dinghies, four tractors and a van allegedly used for unlawful fishing activities.

The raids covered the coastal areas of Mawadi Odi, Kadiraweli, Nayaru and Black Point in Trincomalee, as well as Veththalakerni and Kaddaikadu in Jaffna.

The suspects, along with the banned fishing gear and seized vehicles, were handed over to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources offices in Mullaitivu, Jaffna, Cod Bay and Valaichchenai, and the Maradankerni Police for legal action. (Newswire)
