More than 20 killed in weekend road accidents, including Police sergeant

Sri Lanka Police reported a spate of fatal road accidents across the country between May 29 and May 31, leaving more than 20 people dead and dozens injured.
The incidents involved motorcycles, three‑wheelers, lorries, buses, and private vehicles, with several drivers arrested in connection with the crashes.
On May 29, a 58‑year‑old pedestrian was killed after being struck by a motorcycle in Peradeniya. The 33‑year‑old rider from Gampola was arrested.
In Nittambuwa, a 70‑year‑old woman from Kalagedihena died after being hit by a motorcycle. The 21‑year‑old rider from Pasyala was taken into custody. In Galigamuwa, a 70‑year‑old pedestrian was killed in a motorcycle collision. The 19‑year‑old rider from Wattala was arrested.
On May 30, a 46‑year‑old pedestrian died after being hit by a lorry in Elpitiya. The 24‑year‑old driver from Gampola was arrested. In Giriulla, a 68‑year‑old passenger in a three‑wheeler was killed when a lorry collided with the vehicle. The 53‑year‑old driver was injured.
In Weliweriya, a 59‑year‑old motorcyclist from Henegama died after colliding with a three‑wheeler and then a cab. The 24‑year‑old cab driver from Malwana was arrested. In Ganemulla, a 20‑year‑old rider from Ragama died after his motorcycle struck a wall. His passenger was injured. In Mahiyanganaya, a 22‑year‑old rider from Mapakadawewa was killed in a collision between a registered and an unregistered motorcycle. Police said the accident was caused by the deceased.
On May 31, a 54‑year‑old police sergeant attached to Gonagangaara Police Station was killed when his motorcycle was hit by another bike carrying intoxicated passengers in Buttala. The 36‑year‑old rider from Unawatuna was injured and arrested. In Weligama, a 67‑year‑old woman from Katuwana died after being struck by a private bus. The 44‑year‑old driver from Matara was arrested.
On the same day, a 57‑year‑old pedestrian was killed in a motorcycle collision in Devalegama. The 26‑year‑old rider from Rambukkana was arrested. In Negombo, a 76‑year‑old woman from Kurana died after being hit by a bus. The 51‑year‑old driver from Embilipitiya was arrested.
In Meegoda, the most serious incident occurred when a cab ploughed into a crowd at a Vesak Dansal queue, killing seven and injuring seven. The 42‑year‑old driver from Piliyandala, found to be intoxicated, was arrested along with the vehicle.
