Electricity today & tomorrow: Update from NSO

Sri Lanka’s National System Operator (NSO) says several electricity feeders have been temporarily disconnected across the country to maintain the stability of the national power grid amid unusually low electricity demand and high solar power generation.

In a statement issued today (30), the NSO said electricity demand had dropped significantly due to the Vesak Poya holiday and the long weekend, while solar power generation from rooftop systems had exceeded expectations because of favourable weather conditions.

As a result, authorities disconnected a number of 33kV electricity feeders in areas where solar power generation exceeded local demand, in order to safeguard grid stability and ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply.

The NSO has requested rooftop solar panel owners to voluntarily switch off their systems from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. today to help restore balance within the national grid. The operator said efforts are underway to normalise the power system and restore supply in affected areas by around 3.00 p.m.

The NSO further warned that similar conditions are expected tomorrow (31) and urged solar panel owners to continue supporting efforts to maintain grid stability by temporarily deactivating their rooftop systems during the same period.

The operator said such cooperation would help avoid further feeder disconnections while ensuring a continuous electricity supply to consumers. (Newswire)
