Police warn of fake traffic fine SMS scam targeting motorists

Sri Lanka Police have warned the public over a scam involving fake SMS and WhatsApp messages sent to motorists claiming they have committed traffic offences captured on CCTV cameras.
In a statement, the Police Media Division said the messages are being sent from fake phone numbers and are designed to appear as if they were issued by the Sri Lanka Police.
According to police, recipients are directed to a fraudulent website and instructed to pay fines for alleged traffic violations.
Police said the fake website has been designed to closely resemble the official GovPay payment platform in an attempt to mislead the public.
Authorities further warned that individuals who access the website and attempt to make payments risk having sensitive information, including credit card details, stolen by scammers.
The Police Media Division urged the public not to click on suspicious links received via SMS or WhatsApp and to exercise caution regarding such messages.
Police also clarified that traffic fines should only be paid after being officially informed of an offence by a police officer and after receiving an official fine slip through the GovPay system. (Newswire)
