A suspect remanded over the recent double murder of an elderly couple in Dikoya had escaped police custody while receiving treatment at hospital before being re-arrested in Bogawantalawa, police said.

‎The suspect had been admitted to the Kandy National Hospital on Tuesday (26) after reporting illness while in remand custody until June 3 and has escaped from the hospital early Wednesday (27) while being under the custody of prison officers.

‎A joint search operation was subsequently launched by prison and police officers, leading to the suspect’s arrest while hiding in the Fetteresso Estate area in Bogawantalawa.

‎The suspect was later produced before the Hatton Magistrate’s Court, where the Hatton Magistrate ordered that he be further remanded until June 3.

‎The suspect had allegedly confessed to carrying out the murder and robbery, claiming he committed the crimes under the influence of his wife in an attempt to settle a loan she had obtained.

‎‎He had also told the police, that he would kill his wife upon release from prison, accusing her of instigating the crime. Following the statement, Bogawantalawa Police instructed the suspect’s wife to report to the police station on Wednesday (27). (Newswire)
