Strong winds and high waves warning issued for several sea areas

The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for strong winds and high waves in several sea areas around the island, valid from 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday (26) until 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday (27).
According to the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota are expected to be rough at times.
The advisory said sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota may experience strong gusty winds of up to 60 kmph.
Swell waves of about 2 to 3 metres in height and wave periods of 10 to 14 seconds are also expected in sea areas off the coast from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
The department warned that nearshore sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Matara via Colombo and Galle could experience surges caused by swell waves.
Naval and fishing communities engaged in activities in the affected sea areas have been advised to remain vigilant. (Newswire)
