Northern Province Governor denies reports of Vesak dansal ban

Nagalingam Vethanayahan, Governor of the Northern Province, has denied social media reports claiming that a ban had been imposed on Vesak dansals and festive decorations in the province.

In a statement issued on Monday (25), the Governor said the reports circulating on social media over the past few days were “completely false” and had no basis.

“I wish to state with full responsibility that no such decision has been taken by the Governor’s Secretariat, and that absolutely no discussions have taken place in this regard,” the statement said.

The Governor alleged that the false claims were being spread intentionally to create ethnic and religious tensions and mislead the public.

“It is evident that such fabricated reports are being deliberately created and spread by certain quarters with the malicious intent of undermining the longstanding ethnic and religious harmony that prevails among our communities,” the statement noted.

The Governor further stated that a complaint had already been lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding the matter.

The public was urged not to believe unverified social media reports and to remain vigilant against misinformation. (Newswire)
