A subcommittee has been appointed by the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus to oversee future legal proceedings related to the alleged child sexual abuse incident reported from Anuradhapura and to recommend institutional and legal reforms aimed at eliminating violence against women and children.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus chaired by Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj at Parliament today (25).

The subcommittee will be led by deputy co-chairs of the caucus, Members of Parliament Samanmali Gunasinghe and Attorney-at-Law Chamindrani Kiriella.

Other members appointed to the subcommittee are Hemali Weerasekara, Dr. Kaushalya Ariyarathna, Attorneys Sagarika Athauda, Nilanthi Kottahachchi, Nilusha Lakmali Gamage, Thushari Jayasinghe, Anushka Thilakarathna, Hasara Liyanage, Hiruni Wijesinghe and Lakmali Hemachandra.

During the meeting, the caucus also decided to examine the ongoing legal proceedings and matters relating to the protection of the girl involved in the incident, which has drawn significant public attention.

Accordingly, a special discussion has been scheduled for June 5, 2026, with the participation of the Sri Lanka Police, the Attorney General’s Department, the National Child Protection Authority and the Department of Probation and Child Care Services.

The discussion is expected to focus on the progress of the case as well as measures to strengthen laws and institutions responsible for preventing violence against women and children. (Newswire)
