Fisheries Minister inspects Ceynor vessel built for Mauritius client

Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Ramalingam Chandrasekar on Thursday (21), inspected the large vessel being constructed by Ceynor Foundation Limited for a private sector client in Mauritius, which has reached it’s final stages.

The minister visited the Ceynor shipyard in Mattakkuliya to review progress on the 55-foot vessel, which is around 90% complete and valued at approximately USD 250,000.

The vessel is expected to be handed over to the Mauritian client in the coming weeks.

Addressing officials during the visit, Chandrasekar said the government aims to transform Ceynor into a leading international-level dockyard by making use of the institution’s existing human and technical resources.

“Ceynor is an institution with enormous potential that can be taken to the international level,” the minister said, noting that a significant number of Sri Lanka’s fishing vessels had been manufactured by the company.

He added that the government plans to increase Ceynor’s production capacity in the future and is seeking technical cooperation from countries including Norway and Japan.

Ceynor Chairman Wasantha Mannapperuma said the company aims to build four large vessels annually using its shipyards in Mattakkuliya and Karainagar, generating more than USD 1 million in foreign exchange earnings.

The initiative is expected to contribute towards the Fisheries Ministry’s target of increasing export revenue from USD 300 million to USD 600 million under its four-year development plan. (Newswire)
