St. Aloysius’ Ready for a Strong 2026 Rugby Season with New Jersey Launch

St. Aloysius’ College, Galle officially launched its 2026 school rugby season on Wednesday, May 6, with the unveiling of the team’s new jersey at a special ceremony held at the school auditorium. The event marked the beginning of another promising chapter for the proud Aloyz rugby tradition.

The current St. Aloysius’ rugby squad will be led by captain Sashika Madulanka, while Hasindu Viduranga will serve as vice-captain for the season. The ceremony was held under the patronage of Principal Pubudu Sampath and was attended by players, parents, old boys, and well-wishers of the college.

The newly introduced jersey reflects the rich rugby heritage of St. Aloysius’ College and symbolizes the discipline, dedication, and fighting spirit expected from the players during the highly competitive school rugby season.

St. Aloysius’ College began playing rugby more than four decades ago and has since emerged as one of the fastest-growing and most respected school rugby institutions in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province. Over the years, the school has produced several outstanding rugby players who have gone on to represent the country at national level.

One of the most memorable moments in the school’s rugby history came in 1998 when the team, captained by Dushmantha Seekkhugewasam, earned promotion to the prestigious Division “A” category. The college also gained national recognition through players such as Dinusha de Soysa and T.B. Amendra, who represented Sri Lanka at the 1999 Asian Youth Games, while Harsha de Soysa represented the country at the 2006 Asian Youth Games.

Among the most anticipated fixtures in the school rugby calendar is the annual clash between St. Aloysius’ College and Richmond College, Galle. The encounter is played for the T.V. Sumanasekara Challenge Trophy, first introduced in 1992. The 30th edition of this historic rugby encounter is scheduled to take place in July this year.

Competing in Group B of Division A this season, the Aloyz rugby team will begin their campaign against Vidyartha College, Kandy on Friday, May 8 at the St. Aloysius’ College grounds.

With renewed energy, a fresh identity, and strong community backing, St. Aloysius’ College is aiming to make a significant impact in the 2026 school rugby season. The jersey launch ceremony served not only as a sporting event, but also as a proud moment that united the entire Aloysian community in support of their team.
