A former member of the Hanguranketha Pradeshiya Sabha has been arrested over an alleged job scam involving promises of employment in Romania, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) said.
The suspect, affiliated with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, was arrested on May 01, by officers of the bureau’s special investigations unit.
The suspect and his wife are accused of defrauding at least 16 individuals of Rs. 21.3 million by claiming to provide jobs in the construction sector in Romania.
Complainants had alleged that the suspects issued employment agreements after collecting money.
Investigations revealed that the main suspect had previously worked in Romania for two years and had used that experience to carry out the scam.
Officials said the suspect had fled his residence in Rikillagaskada and was later found hiding in a rented house in Kadugannawa before being arrested.
