Sri Lankan athlete Nipuni Wasana returned to the island after winning the gold medal in the women’s 50kg beach wrestling event at the 6th Asian Beach Games held in Sanya, China.

She secured the gold medal after defeating a Vietnamese opponent in a closely contested final.
The victory is being regarded as a significant achievement for Sri Lankan sports on the international stage.

“Nipuni’s historic gold medal victory, achieved by defeating her Vietnamese opponent in a thrilling final, adds a moment of profound pride to our nation’s sporting history. Her achievement is a clear testament to the success of the “Mission Olympic” program initiated by our Ministry,” Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said in a Facebook post.

Nipuni received a warm welcome upon her arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport, where officials and supporters paid tribute to her for bringing international recognition to Sri Lanka.

Officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Department of Sports Development, representatives of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka, and senior officers of the Sri Lanka Air Force were among those present to welcome her. (Newswire)
