Hilton Yala Marks World Wildlife Day 2026 with Educational Wildlife Workshop for University Students

In commemoration of World Wildlife Day 2026, Hilton Yala Resort reinforced its commitment to conservation, education, and responsible tourism by hosting a three-day wildlife workshop for 40 Faculty of Science university students, led by the resort’s expert Rangers’ Team.
Designed to provide meaningful field exposure and deepen understanding of Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity, the programme combined academic learning with immersive, hands-on experiences within one of the country’s most significant natural landscapes.
The workshop featured a series of specialised sessions delivered by leading experts in the field. A highlight of the programme was the “Tracks & Signs” lecture and field visit session, conducted by Sajith Withanage, Head Ranger at Hilton Yala Resort and the only ranger in Sri Lanka certified by the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA), where students gained practical experience in identifying animal tracks and interpreting wildlife behaviour in natural habitats.
The academic component was further strengthened through in-depth presentations on Sri Lanka’s biodiversity, including a session on “Mammals of Sri Lanka” focusing on species found within Yala National Park, and “Amphibians of Sri Lanka” which explored the ecological importance of amphibian species and their role in maintaining balanced ecosystems.
To complement the classroom sessions, students also participated in a guided educational safari, offering a rare opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural environment and connect theoretical knowledge with real-world conservation practices.
“At Hilton Yala, we believe that true sustainability lies in education and awareness,” said Gitanjali Chakravarthy, General Manager of Hilton Yala Resort. “Through initiatives such as this, we aim to inspire future generations to embrace the wild, respect nature, and play an active role in protecting the incredible biodiversity that surrounds us. This programme reflects our ongoing commitment to responsible tourism and meaningful community engagement.”
“Workshops like these are essential in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and field-based understanding,” said Sajith Withanage, Head Ranger at Hilton Yala Resort. “By engaging students directly within natural habitats, we encourage a deeper appreciation for wildlife and the importance of conservation, while equipping them with practical skills that will support their future work in environmental sciences.”
This initiative forms part of Hilton’s global Travel with Purpose strategy, contributing to the brand’s broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. By fostering education, promoting conservation awareness, and supporting the development of future scientists and environmental stewards, Hilton Yala continues to play an active role in preserving Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.
As Hilton’s only wildlife resort globally, Hilton Yala remains committed to creating experiences that go beyond hospitality—championing sustainability, conservation, and meaningful engagement with the destination, while inspiring a deeper respect for the natural world.
