Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said that an investigation is underway into another payment issue involving $625,000 remitted from Sri Lanka to the United States Postal Service, after U.S. authorities informed local officials the funds had not been received.

He made the remarks in response to questions from journalists regarding the recently reported diversion of $2.5 million in Treasury funds allegedly linked to a cyber fraud.

Addressing the postal matter, Jayatissa said the Criminal Investigation Department and the Department of Posts are conducting parallel investigations.

He added that initial findings indicate the transactions were carried out on two separate occasions.

“Sri Lanka has made the payment, but the U.S. Postal Service has informed us that it has not received the funds,” the minister said.

He said investigations into the issue were launched several weeks ago and noted that other probes are also being conducted at the state level into separate incidents of alleged malpractice.

“I cannot comment that if it is linked to this incident, but I can say that there is an ongoing investigation,” he said. (Newswire)
