Not Rs 46 crore : TV channel corrects false figures on K.D. Lal Kantha assets

A television channel has admitted an error in its earlier reporting on the declared assets of Minister K.D. Lalkantha, saying previously published figures were the result of a calculation mistake.

In a correction issued on Saturday, the channel said an earlier report had incorrectly stated that the minister’s securities were worth Rs. 38.39 crore and that his total gross assets exceeded Rs. 46 crore.

The outlet said the correct value of the declared securities should have been approximately Rs. 143,475, while the total gross value of the assets declared by K.D. Lalkantha was around Rs. 8 crore.

The channel said the correction followed a legal notice sent by the minister’s lawyer, who informed the broadcaster that the previously reported securities value and total asset figures were inaccurate.

It also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to K.D. Lalkantha and said the correction was being issued under the media’s right to rectify errors.

Earlier, K.D. Lalkantha had issued a legal notice against Asia Broadcasting Corporation (Private) Limited, alleging that a report aired on April 16 had misrepresented his 2025 assets and liabilities declaration.

The notice claimed figures had been exaggerated, including the reported value of shares held in his daughter’s name, which the minister said were worth around Rs. 143,000 and not hundreds of millions of rupees as stated in the report.

The minister sought Rs. 10 billion in damages and warned of legal action if the demand was not met. (Newswire)
