Over 12,300 Sri Lankans die annually from Tobacco – IPS Sri Lanka

The Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (IPS) has highlighted the urgent need for stronger tobacco taxation, citing alarming figures on tobacco-related deaths.

According to research by the World Health Organization (WHO), over 12,300 Sri Lankans die every year from diseases linked to tobacco use.

In a message for World Health Day 2026, IPS Sri Lanka stressed that higher tobacco taxes are recognized by the WHO as the single most cost-effective public health intervention to prevent these deaths.

“Tobacco isn’t just a health issue; it kills thousands annually. Strong tobacco taxes cut smoking and save lives, paving the way for healthier futures,” the IPS Sri Lanka added in its message on social media. (Newswire)
