Lebanon has declared a national day of mourning following a wave of Israeli airstrikes that killed at least 254 people and injured more than 1,165 in a single day, according to Lebanese authorities.
The attacks, described as among the deadliest in recent months, prompted Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to announce that the government is mobilising “all of Lebanon’s political and diplomatic resources to stop the Israeli killing machine.”
Lebanon’s Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine also appealed for urgent international assistance, warning that the country’s healthcare system is under severe strain as hospitals struggle to treat the large number of civilian casualties resulting from the strikes.
The escalation comes amid continued tensions despite a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Lebanon was not included in that ceasefire arrangement, indicating that Israeli operations would continue.
US Vice President JD Vance reinforced that position, saying Washington “never made that promise” to halt Israeli military actions in Lebanon.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the “terms are clear” regarding Lebanon, urging Washington to choose between a ceasefire or “continued war via Israel,” adding that “it cannot have both.” (Newswire)
