Gammanpila levels IS link allegations against Mujibur Rahman

Former Minister Udaya Gammanpila has alleged that Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman had links to an Islamic State (IS) suspect and was shielded from investigation by a senior police officer.

Speaking at a media briefing, Gammanpila claimed that during investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) had uncovered a connection between Rahman and an IS-linked individual based in India.

“We can understand the relationship between Zahran and Mujibur Rahman, as he is hurt when we say Zahran was the mastermind. During the Easter attacks investigations, the TID uncovered a link between Mujibur Rahman and an IS terrorist in India,” Gammanpila alleged.

He further claimed that attempts to question Rahman were halted due to the intervention of a senior police official.

“The TID wanted to question him, but a top police officer intervened and stopped the inquiry after the link was uncovered,” he said.

Gammanpila also alleged that Rahman had previously opposed investigations into Islamic extremism in Sri Lanka.

Responding to the allegations, SJB MP Mujibur Rahman rejected the claims, questioning why no action had been taken earlier.

“If I was involved, why didn’t they take action when they were in government? Now that investigations are underway to find the mastermind, they are creating diversions,” Mujibur Rahman said, responding to Udaya Gammanpila. (Newswire)
