NWSDB trims water cut period from 24 to 18 hours to five areas

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has announced that water supply to Homagama, Padukka, Maharagama, Piliyandala, and Kesbewa will be suspended once every four days.

Water Board Chairman Chandana Bandara said that on the fifth day, water supply to these areas will be halted, with the suspension period reduced from 24 hours to 18 hours.

He noted that in some cases the duration may vary between 3, 6, 12, 15, or 18 hours, while certain areas may not experience any suspension at all.

Consumers will be notified of the suspension times and durations via SMS messages sent to the mobile numbers registered for water bill notifications.

Bandara further explained that the rapid decline in water levels at the Kalatuwawa reservoir was the reason for the decision, adding that the reservoir currently holds water sufficient for only about 20 days.

As a result, the daily release of water from Kalatuwawa has been reduced from 90,000 cubic meters to 75,000 cubic meters, he said.

Meanwhile, the Water Board Chairman added that the Labugama reservoir has water sufficient for around 45 days, and therefore, no decision has been taken to suspend water supply to Colombo city. (Newswire)
