PC Kuvera de Zoysa announces Candidature for BASL Presidency
President’s Counsel Kuvera de Zoysa has announced his candidature for the post of President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) for the 2027/2028 term.
His decision comes amid what legal practitioners describe as significant challenges facing the profession, with calls for strong and unifying leadership within the BASL.
According to a statement, a number of senior and junior members of the association, including several past Presidents of the BASL and fellow President’s Counsel, had urged de Zoysa to submit his nomination. The appeal was also supported by practitioners from Colombo and outstation Bar Associations, including formal written requests from senior members.
Following consultations, de Zoysa said he had decided to enter the race in response to what was described as a broad and inclusive appeal from across the Bar.
His candidature has received endorsements from several former BASL Presidents, including Romesh de Silva, Ikram Mohamed, W. Dayaratne, Geoffrey Alagaratnam, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Kalinga Indatissa, U. R. De Silva and Saliya Pieris. It has also been backed by senior President’s Counsel including K. Kanag-Isvaran and Faiz Musthapha, among others.
De Zoysa has more than 30 years of experience as a practitioner in commercial and civil law. He has served in multiple roles within the BASL, including as Chairman of the National Law Conference in 2014 and 2015, Chairman of National Law Week and the Social and Welfare Committee in 2017, and Chairman of the Junior Bar Committee from 2018 to 2019, representing more than 8,000 junior members.
He has also contributed as a resource person in continuing legal education programmes covering civil procedure, intellectual property law, commercial litigation, arbitration and company law.
In a statement, de Zoysa said he was honoured by the confidence shown by colleagues and pledged to work toward uniting the profession while safeguarding its independence and dignity.
