No formal ruling needed on Protection of Occupants, Rent Repeal bills : SC

Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne informed Parliament today (17) that the Supreme Court has determined there is no need to issue a formal ruling on the “Protection of Occupants” and “Rent Repeal” bills, which were challenged under Article 121(1) of the Constitution.
He said the decision followed an undertaking given to the Attorney General by the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice on Feb. 6 that the bills would not proceed in their current form. Instead, they will be referred to an expert committee for review and later presented as new bills.
The Speaker said the court’s decision would be printed in the official report of today’s parliamentary proceedings. (Newswire)
