Govt to launch pilot project introducing A/C buses for persons with special needs

The government has approved a pilot project to introduce 10 air-conditioned, low-floor buses equipped with special facilities for persons with special needs.

The initiative will be implemented using funds allocated under the Clean Sri Lanka Project, with the aim of improving accessibility and comfort in public transport.

Procurement for the purchase of the 10 buses has already been completed, and the vehicles are expected to arrive in the country by Feb. 15.

As it has been identified that the Sri Lanka Transport Board currently lacks the physical and digital infrastructure required to operate and maintain the new buses.

As a result, the buses will be assigned to Lanka Metro Transit (Private) Limited, which was established under the Transport Board, in line with a Cabinet decision taken on July 21 last year. The move forms part of a broader project to modernise public transport by deploying 100 technologically advanced buses within the Colombo urban area.

Cabinet approval has been granted for a proposal submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development to operate the buses and related services under Lanka Metro Transit.

Officials said the pilot project is expected to serve as an initial step toward a more inclusive and modern public transport system, particularly for persons with special needs in urban areas. (NewsWire)
