Japan grants JPY 332 million for public sector scholarship project

The Government of Japan has extended a grant aid of JPY 332 million for the Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) project. This initiative aims to train young, promising administrative officers in the Sri Lankan public sector by offering them postgraduate education at leading universities in Japan. The goal is to strengthen their knowledge and skills and prepare them to become future national leaders in their respective fields.

Under the project, 15 public sector officials will be selected to pursue two-year Master’s degree programs beginning in 2026. Their research areas will include Public Policy, Macroeconomics, Public Finance and Investment Management, Industry Development Policy and Investment Promotion, and Urban and Regional Development.

On July 24, H.E. Mr. Akio Isomata, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, and Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Treasury and the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, signed and exchanged notes in Colombo regarding this grant assistance.

Since its inception in 2010, the JDS project has supported 237 Sri Lankan public sector officials. The program contributes not only to enhancing the individual capacities of public servants but also to strengthening institutional capacity across the public sector—thereby supporting Sri Lanka’s sustainable and inclusive development.

JDS fellows are also expected to serve as bridges between Sri Lanka and Japan, further strengthening bilateral relations by utilizing the academic and social networks they build during their time in Japan.

With the signing of the Exchange of Notes, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the JDS program and expressed hope that it will continue to energize and deepen bilateral cooperation.
